AOTW: Dread Scott

Scott Tyler, also known as Dread Scott is an artist who focuses on the experiences that African Americans face in the United States. Dread Scott was born in Chicago in 1965.

Looking at Dread Scott's work, he mainly focuses on photography, which incorporates politics and the struggles that African Americans face. Although Dread Scott's photographies involve a very dark yet serious message, it is full of colors. He does not darken the photographies, and he also does not take the colors away.

Dread Scott focuses on the oppression that African American's face in our society. He talks about the history of the struggle and the oppression of our society. Out of all of the photographies, my favorite photograph has to be the "On the impossibility of freedom in a country founded on slavery and genocide".This is my favorite because it

is the one that has caught my eyes. First of all this has historically happened, and also the fact that you can see the struggle that he is facing trying not to be pushed or knocked down. The water in a way can represent the struggles faced by many people now, in our society. The he themes he focuses on reminds me of a book called "The New Jim Crow" by Michelle Alexander. She talks about the history about the oppression African Americans faced in the past, and now our society has a new way of oppressing African Americans. According to Michelle Alexander, our prison system is the new way of oppressing certain people and preventing people from moving up the social ladder.
